Bird News

*** Dartford Warbler – a new bird for Tottenham Marshes!!! ***

The monthly Bird Survey group for the West Marsh area set out on Sunday 29th December 2024 not expecting anything out of the ordinary, especially as it was cold and damp. However, Jeff, Debbie, Ivor and Janice were stopped in their tracks when Jeff and then the others all glimpsed a small, dark bird with a very cocked tail. So distinctive, Debbie knew it had to be a Dartford Warbler – not recorded before on the Marshes despite many years of our surveys!

We spent a while trying to re-find it so we could get a good view and perhaps a photo, unfortunately it proved elusive although Jeff had a few fleeting views.

We put out the news of the sighting and another birder, Paul G, managed a photo a few hours later so it was confirmed.

Other birders tried and failed to see it but Terry and Paul (occasional helpers on our bird surveys) did see it on Thursday morning 2nd Jan 2025.

Friday 3rd Jan was the usual Friday Walkers walk on the Marshes and Janice was persuaded to choose a route on West Marsh. The day was crisp and clear, much better for photography. Ivor and Debbie split off in the hope of seeing the Dartford Warbler and discovered Jeff had also returned.

Perhaps the sun was encouraging the bird to vocalise and Debbie picked up its alarm call which made it so much easier to pinpoint the location of the bird as it was flitting around on tops of brambles, and then dropping out of sight, in the same area.

It never came very close (unlike the initial sighting close to our path) but Ivor’s long lens and his skill captured this delightful bird – thanks, Ivor.
