Painted Lady

One of our FoTM members sent me this photo of a Painted Lady taken by Old Lea/Coppermill Stream on 30th June.  A little beyond the Tottenham Marshes but in the adjacent area which is the site of the proposed Walthamstow Wetlands.  Thanks, Mick.

Thanks go to Chamara for this lovely set of photos – hope I’ve identified them correctly (not sure about the Skipper?!)

Edit – David Cottridge has confirmed it is an Essex Skipper and the dark brown butterfly is a female Ringlet (I couldn’t see the rings but I should have noticed the rounded edge of the hindwing!)

A Snowy Bird Survey on 20th January 2013

Soft snow kept falling as we walked around the Marshes – it really was a winter wonderland.  Mark went back after the survey and captured some atmospheric images.

Stonechat and Other Autumn Migrants

Peter Lambert wrote on the 2oth:

Good morning, with my first Stonechat of the year, a female/immature on Clendish Marsh.  This is the first autumn record I’ve had at the Marshes since 2009 – the last year Stonechat wintered on the Marshes.  A lot of passage West too, with Brambling heard overhead on three different occasions (also first of the year), Siskins, Redpolls, Skylark, Linnet, 3 groups of Redwings, Chaffinches and Meadow Pipits.  Also about 345 Starlings W, biggest group c150.

Latest Reports – Autumn here edition.

Pete Lambert wrote on Tuesday:

‘Over Tottenham Marshes early for the first time for 12 days and realised autumn was here as I soon heard my first Redwings of the autumn calling!  Later two Redwings flying around calling from trees at Clensdish Marsh too.  2 Siskins SW calling over Stonebridge Wood later, then 32 Jackdaws high SW just before 10am.  Also saw a large moth fluttering round the trees near the Pond that might have been  a Jersey Tiger’.

Good prospects for this Saturday’s Bird Survey!

Strange fly

We spotted this strange fly while out out on the bird survey. I took a photo. Later when I looked it was clear why it was so strange looking. Also this really strange fungi was in the water by the chalk bridge. Dermot
